Stall Warnings Heard On AirAsia Cockpit Voice Recorder

Investigator Says Pilots Were 'Trying To Recover The Plane'

An investigator on the team working to determine what happened to AirAsia Fight 8501 says that the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) captured the sound of stall warnings and the pilots working to regain control of the Airbus A320. The investigator spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Reuters reports that the source, who is affiliated with Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC), said that the Flight Data Recorder  (FDR) confirmed that the stall warning systems had been activated, and that there were times on the CVR when the sound of the warnings overpowered the voices of the cockpit crew.

The source told reporters that the FDR also showed that, in the final minutes of the flight, the airplane "climbed at a speed which was beyond normal."

Both devices were recovered from the wreckage of the plane last week. Officials in Indonesia said that they may release some initial findings this week, but it will not be a full preliminary report.
