Experimental Solar Airship Down In Canada

Two Seriously Injured In The Accident

An experimental, solar-powered airship went down in a tobacco field near the Brantford, Ontario Canada airport Friday morning, resulting in the serious injury of the two people on board.

The CBC reports that the aircraft was making a landing approach to the Brantford airport when it suddenly fell to the ground.

The aircraft is described by Solar Ship, the company that has developed the aircraft, as a hybrid “buoyantly-assisted aircraft made possible through a confluence of modern developments." It is powered by solar panels on top of the helium-filled wing, but has a fuselage from a more traditional airplane.

The injuries to the two men on board, who were not identified, were described as "non-life threatening."

Solar Ship is being built in a facility at the Brantford airport.
