Colorado University Boulder Developing UAV-Borne Lightning Sensors

Would Fly The Aircraft Into Thunderstorms For Research Purposes

A recently-funded project at the University of Colorado Boulder could lead to the creation of an instrument that can detect electric field charges which measure lightning strikes.

AVUSI report on its website that the university’s College of Engineering and Applied Science is being supported by the Jonathan Merage Foundation. Previously the foundation funded UC-Boulder’s work on the VORTEX2 tornado research project.

The new project will have a Tempest fixed-wing UAV scouting locations for lightning strikes. An SUV that will serve as a base of operations and WiFi hotspot for the UAV will be purchased with the funding.

The first deployment of the UAV into a thunderstorm is planned for next year.
