If At First You Don't Succeed...

AAL Tries Again To Raise Fares

This just hasn't been a very good year for fare hikes. More than a half-dozen times so far this year, airlines have tried to increase ticket prices and each time the effort has been shot down by low-cost carriers' refusal to match the hikes.

But that isn't stopping American Airlines from trying again. The Fort Worth-based airline Thursday bumped fares $5.00 each way, effective immediately.

American says it needs the increase to offset sky-high fuel prices. Crude oil hit $42.75 a barrel Thursday -- the highest price in the history of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

"As the price of crude oil continues at record high levels above $40 a barrel, all airlines have experienced significant increases in the cost of jet fuel," American said in a statement on the fare hikes.
