ANN RealTime Update -- 2214 EST, 12.12.05: This
is what we know... Three fatalities have been confirmed in this
tragic accident, Pilot/Owner Mark Johnson and his parents, Arthur
Johnson, 78, Maryann Johnson, 77.
The aircraft impacted steeply with an estimated 30-40 degree
pitch negative position. The parachute was not deployed but the
impact did eject portions of it from the airframe. Had it been
deployed in time, this is a scenario that seems tailor-made for its
intended purpose.
Weather reports are mixed but there does appear to have been a
significant area of IFR, rain, and/or freezing rain in the vicinity
of the accident site. The pilot was VFR rated and had
reportedly begun training for his instrument rating. The
aircraft, an SR22-GTS, was picked up from the factory last month
and was virtually new. Johnson was a member of the tight-knit Cirrus Owner's and Pilots
Association.
ANN extends our heart-felt condolences to the family, and
friends of the Johnson family.
First Report:
There are but the sketchiest of details to go by, but a relatively
new SR22 (file photo, below) has apparently gone down in Minnesota,
late Sunday night, resulting in the deaths of all three aboard. The
aircraft, N621PH, was reportedly bought last month and the pilot
who owned the aircraft (not confirmed yet as having been on board)
was a fairly new flyer, according to Cirrus community sources.
The accident took place in SW Minnesota, in the community of
Ivanhoe and investigators are currently working over the scene
which is fairly snow-bound at the moment.
The aircraft's impact is reported as having been "severe" and
initial reports do not indicate that this was a survivable
accident. While the aircraft's emergency parachute system was found
partially deployed (outside the airframe), information from local
sources indicates that the chute was still (mostly) in the
deployment bag and was not in a decelerative configuration.
