Pilot Fatally Injured In Mid-Air Collision En Route To Italian Air Show

Second Pilot Suffered Minor Injuries When The Planes Went Down In The Water

Two aircraft reportedly en route to the Spiaggia d’Argento Air Show in Alba Adriatica on Italy’s east coast collided in mid air Sunday, resulting in the fatal injury of one of the pilots.

The accident was captured on video by spectators and posted on YouTube.

The video shows the two planes flying low over the ocean when one appears to lose power and falls into the path of the second airplane. A section of wing separated from one of the aircraft as a result of the collision.

The U.K. newspaper Metro reports that one pilot, 43-year-old Luigi Wilmo Franceschetti, was able to make a successful emergency landing in the water, coming to a stop inverted in shallow water near a crowded beach. The body of the other pilot, identified as 37-year-old Marco Ribbi, was found by rescue divers in the cockpit of his airplane.

The type of aircraft was not specified in the report.
