Officers Unhurt In Topeka Police Helo Downing

R44 II Was Purchased By City Last Year

Two officers with the Topeka Police Department were unhurt when the Robinson R44 II they were flying went down Friday night on the campus of Washburn University.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports little information is available about what may have caused the helo to crash near Stoffer Science Hall, other than the call came in about the accident just after midnight.

The helicopter, which was purchased by the department last year, was substantially damaged. The department also operates a Schweizer 300C.

TPD spokesman Dave Johnson said both officers onboard were taken to the hospital for observation, but were released soon after.

In a case of lousy timing, the accident occurred about 11 hours after Mayor Bill Bunten vetoed a bill to reauthorize Topeka's purchase of a second R-44 for police use.
