Investigators Look At Mechanical Issues In NY Helicopter Incident

Police Helo Went Down In Jamaica Bay, Flotation Units Prevented Sinking

A police helicopter providing security for President Obama's arrival at the United Nations made an emergency water landing Thursday, which investigators say was likely due to a mechanical failure onboard the aircraft.

The pilot deployed the helicopter's emergency floatation system on the Air and Sea Rescue helicopter before it went down in Jamaica Bay near Brooklyn. It landed about 30 yards from shore, according to multiple media sources including the Associated Press.

The helicopter was on approach to an NYPD airfield adjacent to the bay when it went down. There were six police officers on board, including two scuba divers and the pilot. Those on board the aircraft say they heard a "loud noise" before the aircraft began to lose altitude.

The crew sustained only minor injuries in the accident, according to NY1.com, an Internet news channel. AP reports that the helicopter suffered a damaged rotor and windshield.
