Bell Helicopter Workers Reject Contract

Union workers at Bell Helicopter Textron in Fort Worth, TX voted Sunday by a 3-to-1 margin to reject a proposed contract, that the company had called its best and final offer.

The Associated Press reports members of United Aerospace Workers Local 218 voted 1,390 to 476 against the proposed three-year contract.

“We regret that the two sides were unable to reach agreement on this contract before the Sunday night deadline.” said P.D. Shabay, Executive Vice President and Chief, Human Services Officer for Bell Helicopter.

Health care costs are the key issue. Representatives with Bell saying the company's health care costs costs have tripled since 1999, from $6,000 to $18,000 per employee.

Despite Bell's earlier assertion that the contract was the best offer union members could hope for, negotiations between the two parties are scheduled to continue... and, for now, the union has urged workers to report to their jobs as usual.
