The Strange Saga Of Air Sahara

737 Missed Runway, Hopes To Catch A Train

It began on Sunday, when an Air Sahara 737 skidded off the runway at Mumbai, India, forcing the closure of the strip and disrupting air traffic there ever since.

Now, it appears the regional railroad will get involved, helping to move the aircraft back onto the tarmac.

"The Central Railway will help us slide the aircraft in the runway as they have the requisite equipment," Mumbai airport manager Shiv Bhagan told the Indo-Asian News Service.

It's the second plan to be considered by airport officials. The first involved using air bags to lift the aircraft from the desert floor and, well, roll it onto the runway.

"Two airbags have been kept under the wings and two under the fuselage and after they are inflated, chains will pull the aircraft to the runway. The entire operation would be completed by Tuesday evening," Bhagan said.

We'll keep you posted...
