Two Dead In Kentucky Crash

Wreckage Spotted By Another Pilot

A Kentucky couple was killed Saturday in the crash of a Cessna 172 near the Monroe County (KY) Airport. The wreckage of their four-place aircraft was discovered by another pilot after a mechanic became concerned because the couple was overdue.

The aircraft was rented Saturday with a full tank of fuel. The mechanic became worried when it didn't return after four hours -- the approximate duration of a flight with full tanks, he said.

Another pilot flying near the airport told WATE TV News that he spotted the wreckage just feet from the runway threshold. Investigators said it appeared the 1965 Skyhawk had briefly touched down on the runway before the pilot lost control.
