He Hoped He Would Have The Airplane Longer...

But It Went Down Within 40 Minutes Of Closing The Deal

A Massachusetts man who bought a 1946 Aeronca Champ still hasn't gotten to fly it solo ... because the previous owner who was flying him back to New Hampshire with his new pride and joy was forced to land at Fox Ridge Golf Club in Auburn, Maine, 40 minutes after they had closed the deal.

Brooks Ladd of Chelmsford was the new owner. He bought the Champ from Maine Conservation Commissioner Patrick McGowan in Watertown, Maine. As part of the deal, McGowan agreed  to fly Ladd back to Hampton, New Hampshire, but they only made it as far as Auburn before the engine quit, forcing the golf course arrival.

Neither man was injured in the landing, but the gear collapsed, which led to a bent prop and a damaged fuselage. The Boston Herald reports that Ladd was insured, and that he expects he will be reimbursed for the damage to his 'new' Champ. The FAA and NTSB will investigate the incident.
