Sightseeing Plane Down In Alaska

Eight Cruise Ship Passengers, Pilot Fatally Injured

A DeHavilland DHC-3T Otter airplane carrying eight cruise ship passengers has gone down in Alaska fatally injuring everyone on board the aircraft.

The Otter went down Thursday in mountainous terrain about 25 miles north of Ketchikan according to the NTSB.

CNN reports that the passengers had booked the shore excursion through Holland America Cruise line. They had been aboard the MS Westerdam, which had left Seattle Saturday for a seven-day cruise. The plane was carrying the passengers on a scenic tour of the 2-million acre Misty Fjords National Monument. The area is accessible only by boat or floatplanes.

The NTSB has dispatched a "Go" Team from its office in Ketchikan.

The wreckage was first reported by a helicopter pilot, who saw the remains of an airplane against a granite rock face some 800 feet above Ella Lake.

The recovery process was not expected to begin before Friday due to poor weather conditions, according to Alaska State Troopers.
