Something for the Paine

Washington state wants to create a “world leading” research and development center focused on low-carbon Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). The facility is planned for Snohomish County’s Paine Field (PAE)—home of Boeing’s historic wide-body production facility as well as low-carbon aerospace startups ZeroAvia and MagniX.

LA Party to Serve as Worldwide Event’s Flagship Happening

Los Angeles celebrated Yuri’s Night with a party at the Samuel Oschin Space Shuttle Endeavour Pavilion at the California Science Center. Attendees had the rare opportunity to closely examine the historic spacecraft, to dance beneath its fuselage and wings, and lose themselves at the energetic confluence of space exploration’s grand past and dazzling future.

America’s Plight Worsens

The National Research University Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI), one of Russia’s top technical and research institutions, announced that it would found and operate an aeronautical and aerospace campus in China’s Wenchang district. Located on the island of Hainan in the South China Sea, the district is home to the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center, one of China's four spaceports. Construction of the 137-acre campus will commence in September 2023 with classes to convene in September 2025.

WACO Aircraft brought its latest airplane, the YMF-5F Floatplane, to AirVenture this summer. When the aircraft was introduced last year, the company said that the combination of a new 300 HP engine, the new MT constant speed propeller and Aerocet 3400 Amphibious floats helped make this ambitious project a reality. This blending of equipment has allowed WACO to build a great performing, exceptionally fun, and beautiful WACO Amphibious float plane, the YMF-5F (The "F" is for Float, and Fun).

2Excel Expands Diamond Survey Fleet

Diamond's twin-engine aerial survey aircraft has once again proven popular, with another sale to 2Excel  in the UK. The company opted for a DA62 Multi-Purpose Platform with a Trakka TC-375 camera and the Diades Marine C-Ranger 200 maritime radar, able to provide surveillance over marine and coastal environments. The DA62 MPP took pole position as a recon aircraft, combining a slow loiter speed and 10 hour endurance to provide the same data collection at a fraction of the cost.

On February 15, 2023, about 1730 Pacific standard time, an unregistered Star Lite SL-1, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Corning, California. The pilot was fatally injured. The unregistered airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The owner of the airplane stated that on the day of the accident he and the accident pilot were taking turns flying the airplane.

CAE executives were on hand on April 4th to celebrate the grand opening of the company's brand new Las Vegas, Nevada business aviation training facility. The location will go to sate some of the increasing demand for bizjet training seen on the West Coast, the first CAE location to be built in the region.

Team members comprise international regional safety teams; safety authorities, including civil aviation authorities; and other industry stakeholders that work to improve global vertical flight safety.

Mountain Wave Mountain waves occur when air is being blown over a mountain range or even the ridge of a sharp bluff area. As the air hits the upwind side of the range, it starts to climb, thus creating what is generally a smooth updraft which turns into a turbulent downdraft as the air passes the crest of the ridge. Mountain waves can cause significant fluctuations in airspeed and altitude with or without associated turbulence.
