In An Unusual Twist Jet A Prices On Average Equal Or Exceed 100LL Prices
Word on the ramp is that Jet A prices, in some areas, equal or exceed that of 100LL, regardless of whether you’re at the pump or the truck.
Those whose winged chariots run on 100LL are probably accustomed to seeing bargain basement Jet A prices that cater to the few shiny birds that choose to stop by, versus the prices a piston-driver may typically see. We’re told that is so because Jet A fuel is less complicated and less expensive to manufacture and transport. That being the case, why is Jet A climbing the price hike ladder?
The site, 100LL, updates continuously and shows average fuel price by region, however, to satisfy your curiosity, enter the airport ID, city or FBO name, and have your magnifying glass or special beverage at hand while you steady yourself to investigate your familiar airports and hangouts. Of course, averages don’t tell the full picture, they are just that, averages. However, anyone who has skimmed prices enroute know that even 10nm can make a difference between $0.20, $1.20 or more.
The pilot community has called for greater transparency in publication of fuel prices and ‘orange stick’ fees, and while there has been some improvement, much work remains to be done. Whether or not you take on fuel is, in some cases an influencing factor, as is whether someone with orange sticks on the ramp marshals you to parking to which you could have navigated without assistance. Airport management have great flexibility in what they can charge for ‘services’ provided, and the adage “know before you go” cannot be emphasized enough if you want to avoid $urpri$e$. Do let us know if you encounter something ‘interesting’ to share. We’d love to hear from you.
