Nose Gear Tire From Vietnamese Airplane Discovered Four Days After Flight

Tire Apparently Separated From ATR-72 On Takeoff

A tire from the nose gear of a Vietnam Airlines ATR-72 which apparently separated from the airplane on takeoff last week was discovered in a field near Hai Phong airport where the flight had originated. The plane's crew was unaware that the wheel was missing, even after an apparently normal landing.

Crews had been combing the area looking for the missing tire for several days after it was noticed by workers at the airport. It was found less than a mile from the airport in a field.

According to a report appearing in the Thanh Nien News, the crew did not notice any discrepancies during its pre-flight checks. The takeoff, flight, and landing were all reportedly "smooth."

The wheel and axle have been sent to France for inspection by the Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety, which is working with Airbus to find the cause of the incident.

Vietnamese Aviation Authorities reportedly ordered inspections of all of the ATR-72 aircraft in the Vietnam Airlines fleet. No other problems were found.
