Rockwell Collins Unveils Touch-Control Flight Displays

Company Returns To AirVenture In A Major Way

Sunday news conferences are pretty rare at AirVenture ... in fact, there was only one on the schedule for this week. Rockwell Collins too, the opportunity to  unveil the industry’s first touch-control primary flight displays for business jets and turboprop aircraft, which will be available on future applications of the company’s Pro Line Fusion avionics system. The announcement was made today at the 59th Annual Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture in Oshkosh.

“These displays demonstrate our focus on empowering pilots with natural head-up, eyes-forward interfaces,” said Colin Mahoney, vice president of Sales and Marketing for Rockwell Collins. “Touch-controlled, icon-based controls on the main displays help keep pilots’ attention focused up and forward for safer and more efficient flying. For example, when programming the flight management system, instead of entering information on a console-mounted keypad, pilots can redirect to a graphically displayed waypoint or destination with a single swipe of a finger.” Other simple gestures directly on a map display would control panning and zoom features.

Another benefit of the new displays is a streamlined learning cycle for pilots transitioning to a new aircraft type, enabled by the user-friendly, icon-based graphical user interface.

Mahoney said this was the first time in several years that the company as exhibited at AirVenture, and they have returned with a major invertment in the show. "I've had a lot of people ask me 'why are you exhibiting at Oshkosh?' I prefer to ask the question the other way around. 'Why not?'," Mahoney said. “We are thrilled to present the daily air show, which has become a must-see for EAA AirVenture’s global audience of aviation enthusiasts. Rockwell Collins is committed to inspiring the future of aviation and AirVenture is a fantastic opportunity to reach out to those who share our passion.”

Rockwell Collins is the presenting sponsor of the daily air shows, including the widely popular Night Air Show on Saturday, July 30.
