Airborne-Unmanned 05.08.18: XPO18!, Drone Airspace, Insitu ScanEagle3

Also: Intel Drone Software, Airbus Aerial-DroneBase, DOT App Procedures, Drones Rescues

As divergent as the keynote speakers who addressed a full house at Xponential 2018 were last week, they shared a common message of optimism for the future of unmanned systems.

From a business point of view, PrecisionHawk Inc., CEO Michael Chasen described how his company’s work in preparation of the newly released Pathfinder Report provides a practical path toward ensuring that manned and unmanned aircraft could share the skies safely. The FAA has begun expanding an automated system that will ultimately provide near real-time processing of airspace authorization requests for UAS operators nationwide. The FAA is now phasing in a nationwide beta test of the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) that will deploy the system incrementally at nearly 300 air traffic facilities covering approximately 500 airports. The beta expansion follows successful evaluation of a prototype LAANC system last November. The first facilities taking part in the beta test are listed on the FAA website. The final deployment will begin on September 13. Boeing subsidiary Insitu introduced the ScanEagle3 at AUVSI's Xponential 2018 in Denver, CO. This provides additional benefits to Insitu's customers through commercial pricing, as well as global exportability through a commodity jurisdiction from the U.S. Department of State stating that ScanEagle3 is not covered by U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). ScanEagle3's exclusive engineering and design draws from the best of the Insitu family of UAS products, including previous iterations of ScanEagle, as well as Integrator. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
