Airborne-Unmanned 08.06.19: Drone Finds Injured Man, DJI FPV, Delivery Hiccups

Also: Redesigned B4UFLY App, Wing Drone Delivery, UAS BVLOS Training, Parrot Changes

A Maryland man who had been missing for five days was found alive by a drone operator working as part of a search team.

The missing person was Jason Blake Mabee, 44. He is described as an "avid athlete" who had left his Ellicott City, MD home five days earlier without his cell phone or wallet, according to police. The drone operator was identified as Julian Bustos. He said he joined the search team because his kids and Mabee's are in the same pre-K class. According to the paper, his drone had been in the air only a few minutes when he spotted Mabee at the bottom of a "very steep hill." DJI has launched the DJI Digital FPV Transmission System, which includes FPV goggles, an FPV Air Unit Transmission Module, an FPV remote controller and an FPV camera. The DJI FPV Air Unit Module uses DJI HD Low Latency FPV Transmission technology and offers a low end-to-end latency of 28 milliseconds. The FPV system has a maximum transmission range of 2.5 miles while anti-interference technology brings a reliable feed to the goggles during flight. Additionally, a “Focus Mode” narrows down the signal bitrate to the center of the frame, counteracting interference. A drone delivery program conducted jointly by Swiss Post and Matternet has been suspended following incidents involving two of the aircraft involved in the program. Matternet was operating the autonomous aircraft for the Swiss mail delivery service to transport lab samples between medical facilities for priority cases. In one of the incidents, which occurred in January, the drone made a soft landing after its emergency parachute deployed as programmed following a GPS hardware error.
