Dayton Air Show Birth Of Aviation Pavillion Features Rare Look At Wright Aircraft

An unprecedented showcase of priceless aircraft and artifacts celebrates the ingenuity of aviation's greatest pioneers at the 2003 Vectren Dayton Air Show July 17-20.

Replicas of Wilbur and Orville Wright's six aeronautical craft are being revealed to the public in the Birth of Aviation Pavilion, the 20,000 square foot centerpiece of the Air Show. This air-conditioned exhibit features a walk-through time line that highlights the invention process from 1899-1905. In addition to the Wright-named aircraft, the 1895 Lilienthal Glider, the 1896 Chanute/Herring Glider and the 1896 Langley Aerodome #5 will be on display.

The Birth of Aviation Pavilion presented by Wright Brothers Aeroplane Co.™ tells the true tale of how two men developed the first practical aircraft in Dayton, before taking off for the more aviation hospitable climate of North Carolina. Visitors can see these pioneering projects, which include:

  • 1899 Kite tested their revolutionary aircraft control system.
  • 1900 Glider hosted their first manned flight.
  • 1901 Glider demonstrated the need for further lift research.
  • 1902 Glider solved the lift and control problems.
  • 1903 Flyer I was their first controlled powered flight.
  • 1905 Flyer III was the first truly practical aircraft.

Young people from the organization Bishop's Kids will greet visitors at each timeline station, creating a unique experience that links the future of aviation with its storied past.
