Reminder! The Ultralight Transition Deadline Is Almost Here!

Tick, Tick, Tick...

The January 31, 2007 deadline for ultralight pilots to complete the sport pilot practical exam and knowledge test -- and take advantage of credit given during the transition period -- is fast approaching.

Don't wait until the last minute! (I know, the holidays are here, life is so busy, yadda, yadda, yadda.) You'll need to request a copy of your airman records, though, so it's VERY important to not put things off.

Ultralight pilots currently registered with an FAA-recognized ultralight pilot registration program (U.S. Ultralight Association, Aero Sports Connection, or Experimental Aircraft Association), or who register by the issuance of the final Sport Pilot rule (issuance date September 1, 2004) may obtain the sport pilot certificate by:

  • Obtaining a certified copy of the pilot's ultralight pilot records.
  • Pass an aeronautical knowledge written and oral test.
  • Pass a practical flight test. Logged ultralight flight time will be credited toward aeronautical experience and flight proficiency requirements.

The ultralight movement grew out of the '70s sport of hang gliding, when people put small engines on foot-launched hang gliders. As the vehicles developed, they became faster, more maneuverable, and landing gear were added.

In 1982, the FAA implemented the current ultralight regulation FAR Part 103.
