Airborne 03.30.16: USAF Pilots, FAA Drone Report, Aeroprakt A22LS

Also: SFIP16 Debut, April 1st Episode, Glasair's Diesel, Solar Impulse 2, L-39 On Levee, NZ AirShow, NC Drone Arrest, Utah Helo's

The U.S. Air Force is facing some stiff competition for pilots from airlines, but according to Major General, Brian Neal, the Air National Guard is feeling more of a pinch.

The Air Force Times reports that General Neal, the acting director for the Air Guard, told the House defense appropriations subcommittee last week that while retention is a problem for the active duty air force, it is more complex for the Air Guard. He noted that the Air Force has its pilots full-time and can offer retention bonuses, while the National Guard is often sharing them with an airline job. It seems like for a while the FAA and the media was running around like Chicken Little screaming the sky is falling when it came to close calls between airplanes and drones. Now, The Academy of Model Aeronautics says the latest report from the FAA on UAV incidents more accurately characterizes the data it has collected as "sightings" and "reports", rather than the more inflammatory terminology that was used last summer. Being shown at Sun ‘n Fun this year is the Aeroprakt A22LS which traces its ancestry back to a line of popular microlights originally built in Ukraine. It was introduced into the U.S. in 2008, but the dealership program never matured. Now, Dennis Long has reintroduced the A22LS through his company called ‘Aeroprakt USA’, and he is starting to deliver the S-LSA and provide customer service for the A22LS airplanes. The airplane final assembly is now taking place in Poland, and more than 2,000 A22s are in operation around the world. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
