JSTARS Engine Flight Testing Completed

New JT8D Engines Enhance E-8C Performance

Northrop Grumman has completed flight testing of the E-8C JSTARS aircraft after repowering with Pratt & Whitney JT8D-219 turbofans. A total of 808 tests were completed, many of which were concurrent with other Joint STARS programs. The testing regimen originally had planned for 39 total flights, but was accomplished in just 32 flights.

These new engines have replaced the original Pratt TF33 engines, and offer higher thrust and improved efficiency and reliability. The engines have been previously certified by the FAA for the Boeing 707-300, which simplified the approval process for installation on the E-8C. While the JT8D is an old engine program that has been long out of production, it increases the JSTARS' takeoff performance, extends time-on-station and enables higher maximum altitudes for increased mission capable rates while offering the least technical risk. The new engines will lower maintenance costs and save money through greater fuel efficiency.
