Air Force Cessna Lands On Delaware Highway

Road Closed For Several Hours Following The Forced Landing

A single-engine Cessna belonging to the U.S. Air Force with a pilot and flight instructor on board made a forced landing on a highway near Dover, DE on Monday, causing the road to be closed for several hours.

The plane landed in a field near the Air Force Base, went through a fence, and then was steered along the shoulder of Route 1 until it came to a stop in the median about 1730 local time, according to Delaware State Police. The Philadelphia Enquirer reports that no one was hurt in the accident, including the five people in a car that reportedly had to swerve to avoid colliding with the airplane.

FAA records indicate that the airplane is a 1967 Cessna 172E registered to the U.S. Air Force based at Dover AFB.

The plane was removed from the highway median sometime after 2000 EDT Monday night. The incident is under investigation by the FAA and the NTSB.
