Passenger Service Resumes At Beirut Airport

First Airliner Lands Since Israeli Blockade

For the first time since Israeli air raids forced the closure of Beirut's main airport, an international flight landed there Monday... amidst cheers from the terminal and the tarmac.

Qatar Airways Flight 422 carried 118 passengers and crew from Doah to the battered Lebanese capital. The return flight carried 124 back to Doah aboard an Airbus A320.

"The resumption of charter flights by Qatar Airways to Beirut is great news for the people of Lebanon," Qatar Airways CEO Akbar al-Baker said. "After weeks without any air-links to Beirut, Qatar Airways can now begin repatriating Lebanese citizens and also lend our support in terms of aid shipment to the country."

The two sides declared a truce August 14, and so far it's held.

Agence-France Presse reports passengers on board the flight cheered and were handed roses by an enthusiastic crowd inside the terminal. Lebanese officials are now asking other airlines to follow suit.
