Albuquerque Air Traffic Controllers Sound Alarm

Another Warning About Looming Staffing Crisis

Air traffic controllers from the Albuquerque Air Route Traffic Control Center will discuss the serious controller shortages facing their facility and the potential travel and safety concerns associated with having too few eyes handling planes.

The Federal Aviation Administration itself anticipates a Controller shortage nationwide of up to 50 percent in the next 10 years. Timing is particularly critical given an upcoming vote in the Senate Appropriations Committee authorizing funding for the FAA and other transportation-related agencies.

The controllers say a bipartisan group of Senate committee members have asked their colleagues to give $14 million to FAA to begin the critical hiring process. Albuquerque controllers are urging Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) to help the fight for this necessary funding to protect the safety of our skies.
