Aero-TV: Portrait of the U.S. Transportation Safety Institute

A Beauty Amongst Ghastly Federal Agencies

Founded in 1971 and based in Oklahoma City, the Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) is a subsidiary of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA).

The Transportation Safety Institute is tasked with providing high-quality safety, security, and environmental training to federal, state, and local governmental, private sector, and foreign transportation professionals in the aviation, highway traffic, transit, motor carrier, and hazardous materials sectors.

Offering an array of curricula germane to all facets of passenger, cargo, and material transportation, the TSI is a full-service organization, the staff of which comprises experts in the fields of information technology, curriculum development, facilities management, financial oversight, purchasing, contracts management, and human resources.

Yearly, TSI provides face-to-face, virtual, and web-based training to upwards of 25,000 individuals. The agency strives to develop relevant, and comprehensive courses addressing the intricacies and challenges unique to extant transportation modes, and disseminate such via the very latest courseware, concepts, technologies, and instructional infrastructures. In doing so, the TSI, carries out its stated mission of: “ … improving the safety of the worldwide transportation system through the training of transportation safety professionals across federal, state, local and international governments, as well as private industry.”

Currently, TSI offers courses pertaining to: aviation safety, hazardous materials, motor carrier safety, highway traffic safety, public transportation safety, and pipeline safety.

TSI's Aviation Safety Division is home to the National Aircraft Accident Investigation School, which specializes in Safety Management Systems (SMS) and aircraft accident investigations. The School’s courses cover aviation technologies congruous with the general, civil, and commercial aviation sectors, as well as public-use aviation undertaken by federal, state, and local governments. Staff provide training in aviation safety, accident investigation techniques, and safety management through workshops, field activities, hands-on-training, and individual studies.

Training provided by the TSI can be customized to meet discrete personal and organizational requirements.
