San Carlos, CA Airport Renamed For Local Pilot

Half Moon Bay Airport Renamed For The Late Eddie Andreini Sr.

Half Moon Bay Airport (KHAF) in San Mateo County, CA has been renamed for well-known local pilot Eddie Andreini Sr. in a ceremony held August 26th on the field.

Andreini was a beloved local businessman and local pilot who was fatally injured while performing aerobatics during an airshow in 2014.

The Half Moon Bay Review reports that San Mateo County Supervisor Don Horsley said that the process took longer than expected, as county officials believed that FAA approval would be necessary to change the name of the airport. The process accelerated quickly when it became known that all that was needed was a coastal development permit.

The idea was hatched by Sandra Andreini, the wife of Eddie Andreini Jr. She said she wanted to do something to commemorate her father-in-law, and considered parks and benches. But they did not seem to quite fit with his legacy. "Then the airport came, and we said 'Duh'. It was his home away from home," she said.

The county erected a sign at the airport commemorating Andreini Sr. The event was attended by hundreds of people on the lawn of the 3-Zero Cafe located at the airport.
