Nielson played the doctor who tried to diagnose a mysterious illness on board an airliner which affected the pilots as well as some passengers. When the character asked another passenger if he could fly the plane and got the response "Surely you can't be serious," Nielson's character replied with what became one of his most famous lines "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley."

Nielson's acting career spanned more than 60 years. He also starred in spoofs of the police-drama genre 'The Naked Gun' and 'Police Academy'. 'Airplane' was his first comedic role, which is credited for much of his ongoing success.
