Pakistan Launches Production Of JF-17 Block-II Fighter

New Version Of The Aircraft Has Upgraded Avionics And Weapons Capability

Pakistan has reportedly begun production of the Block-II version of its JF-17 fighter aircraft with upgrades to its avionics and weapons systems.

The new airplane comes after 50 of the older version Block-I airplanes were delivered, the final one on Wednesday, according to a report from the French news service AFP. The new planes will be built west of Islamabad at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex.

The fighter has been co-developed with the China National Aero-Technology Import Export Corporation.

Air Vice Marshal Javaid Ahmad told AFP that the first Block-II aircraft will be completed by June of 2014. Other upgrades include improvements to the air-to-air refueling capability and a higher weapons payload.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that "The indigenous manufacturing of JF-17s will not only lead to self-reliance and industrialization but will also further strengthen Pakistan's friendship with China."
