Plane Down On KBNA Runway

Wreckage Apparently Sat On Pavement For Six Hours Before Being Noticed

A Cessna 172 that went down at Nashville International Airport (KBNA) in Nashville, TN Tuesday morning about 0300 apparently was not discovered until about 0900 (CDT) when the pilot of another plane saw the wreckage. The pilot of the airplane, the only person on board, was fatally injured.

News Channel 5 in Nashville reports that the airplane is of Canadian registry. The Transport Canada website confirms that it was last registered to the Windsor Flying Club in Ontario, Canada.

NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson said that the pilot did not contact air traffic control at KBNA, though they have not listened to recordings of radio traffic between the tower and aircraft operating in the area at the time.

There was apparently a  post-impact fire. Other runways at the airport remained open, and operations were not affected.

The National Weather Service says there was dense fog in central Tennessee Tuesday morning, but it was not known if weather was a factor in the accident.
