Airline To Impose Fee For Printed Boarding Pass

Spirit Airline Says It Will Charge $5 For The Piece Of Paper

Just when it seemed that the airline's fee structure could not get more Byzantine, Spirit Airlines may have topped them all by charging a five dollar fee when a passenger asks an agent to print a boarding pass.

Passengers who check in online and print their own boarding pass will not be charged for the piece of paper. CNN reports that at the moment, there is still no fee for using the self check-in kiosk at Spirit ticket counters.

Spirit says it has also reduced nonstop flight fares by five dollars in response to its customer's preferences. They say that in a survey, passengers indicated they would rather print their own boarding pass and save $5 than have a ticket agent print it for them.

Spirit is the first U.S. airline to begin charging for printing boarding passes. They follow the example of Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair, which reportedly charges an even steeper fee for printing.
