Airborne-Flight Training 10.21.21: KSU Skyhawks, USAF Help Wanted, Sonaca 200

Also: ACE' New Exec Director, Nat’l Av Hall of Fame, New ERAU Safety Center, Aviation Scholarships

Textron Aviation released news of a recent order for 10 Cessna Skyhawks, destined for Kansas State University Salinea Aerospace and Technology Campus, bringing their total fleet to 20. “K-State” also owns Bonanzas, Barons, motorgliders, and sailplanes in their collection, all put to use in their Part 141 pilot training program.

The Salina, Kansas school was one of the earliest participants in Textron’s Top Hawk program, receiving their position in 2015. Since then, they use their customized, branded Skyhawks for promotional activities and flight training. The United State Air Force (USAF) found itself short of its annual goal for 1,500 new pilots, as increased airline hiring and low retention draw away aviators towards other careers. The Air Education Training Command (AETC) is the center of USAF's efforts to create pilots fit for stringent military standards. With an overhaul of the candidate selection process for more modern and equitable decision making, and efforts to increase the pool of qualified pilot applicants, training classes should show an improvement in size starting next year. Portuguese international flight school Pull Up Academy announced the selection of the Sonaca 200 for its newest trainer aircraft. The school selected the Sonaca 200 Pro, the highest trim level of the aircraft, including all-EFIS instrumentation provided by a G500 Txi, Gi 275, and other products from the Garmin portfolio. Powered by a Rotax 914F granting 115 hp through a three-bladed propeller, the aircraft is good for 7 hours of cruise flight between refuelings. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
