C-TSB Issues Initial Report On Pelee Island Crash

Caravan That Went Down In Lake Erie Was Overweight

The Canadian Transportation Safety Board reported Tuesday a Cessna 208B Caravan that went down in Lake Erie last January, killing 10 people, was about 15-percent over its maximum weight. Although the C-TSB says weight was probably a factor in the accident, it has not been ruled as the cause.

"The aircraft was overweight, the rest is speculation," said investigator Dennis Rivard at a Kingsville, Ontario, news conference. "We have to rely on witnesses and whatever else data we have to come up with why this happened."

Georgian Express Flight 126, a Cessna Caravan 208B, departed Pelee Island en route to Windsor, Ontario, at 4:38 pm eastern standard time. Shortly after take-off, the aircraft struck the ice-covered surface of Lake Erie, killing all 10 occupants.

It took recovery teams almost two weeks to bring the Caravan up from the bottom of the lake after it crashed. The C-TSB's investigation continues.
