NAFI, FAA Cooperate On Student Sign-Off Language

NAFI Provides Updated Endorsement for Student Sign-offs

The National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) has released an updated logbook endorsement for instructors to use when signing their students off for practical tests.

The new endorsement addresses FAR part 61.39, which previously required three hours of training within the preceding "60 days" from an authorized instructor prior to signoff for a practical test. That regulation changed on October 20, 2009, to require the training be received within the preceding "two calendar months."

NAFI submitted proposed endorsement language to the FAA for confirmation that it meets the requirements of the current 14 CFR Part 61.39(a)(6)(i). In an example of how industry and the FAA work together to provide important information and service to the aviation community, the endorsement was approved by the FAA at last week's 2010 EAA/FAA Winter Meeting at the EAA Headquarters in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

NAFI recommends instructors use the following endorsement when they sign-off students for practical tests:

I certify that {First name, MI, Last name} has received the training as required by section 61.39(a)(6)(i) within the preceding two calendar months and have determined that {he/she} is prepared for the [insert applicable test] practical test.
[DATE] Instructor name, CFI number, CFI Expiration Date.

Test examples to insert:

  • Sport Pilot
  • Recreational Pilot
  • Private Pilot
  • Instrument Pilot
  • Commercial Pilot
  • Flight Instructor
  • Flight Instructor Instrument
  • Multi-Engine Pilot
  • Multi-Engine Instructor
