$30,000 Fine Levied For False Crash Report

50 search and rescue personnel in La Plata County, Colorado, were scrambled after a man called 911 and reported that his arm had been severed in a plane crash, and that up to 12 people had been killed.

The Durango Herald reports that the caller, 59-year-old Edward Pretzer, was visibly intoxicated when he was arrested, and authorities say they plan to try to recover the entire $30,000 price tag of the search.

Pretzer told Dan Patterson, an investigator with the La Plata County Sheriff's office that he thought he was talking to a friend when he made the 911 call. He had been very specific about the location of the alleged crash, and potential rescuers frantically searched along dirt roads just inside a Ute Indian reservation for the wreckage. None was found, and Pretzer was located using GPS co-ordinates from the 911 call.

$30,000 is the estimate for the cost of personnel, fuel and other resources used in the search. County officials say they will attempt to recoup the costs in civil court.
