Rutan Fans Can Try Out The Skigull In An Android App

Developer Releases Free Sim Patterned After The New Design

Burt Rutan is certainly an inspirational figure in the industry.

Take, for example, the story of Stephen Kean, who attended Rutan's presentation on the SkiGull at Oshkosh in July. Kean was so impressed that he incorporated the airplane into a flight simulator app he's offering for free on the Google Play store.

In a email sent to ANN, Kean said he initially developed the sim as "a way for me to fly my Europa XS while grounded. When Burt came out with Skigull  details I included it too, and had it “in the air” before first flight."

The sim allows the operator to adjust the airplane's center of gravity, and its wing sports an NACA 64A401 airfoil typically found on motor gliders. The fully articulated tailplane uses a symmetric airfoil as do the engine pylon, vertical stabilizer and rudder.

Kean says that Skigull simulation updates and features will be added as they solidify and become available. "The Skigull simulation is a work in progress pending actual  flight test metrics yet to be released," he said.
