New JFK Flight Plan Brings Out The NIMBYs

FAA Says Flight Plan Designed To Relieve Congestion

A new FAA flight plan for JFK International Airport could push as many as 200 aircraft per day over Long Island, and that has brought out residents opposed to the plan.

FAA Depiction Of Northeast Corridor

The problem, as always, is noise. The FAA says the plan will not have any significant noise impact, according to a report from television station WNBC in New York. However residents, such as self-described air noise critic Len Schaier, say it will make a "bad situation even worse." He has gone to the trouble to set up a home-made device in his back yard to capture photographs and sound from airplanes passing overhead.

The new traffic pattern has airplanes which depart to destinations to the west from JFK turning north over Nassau County before taking up a westerly course over Long Island Sound and Westchester. Those flights had previously turned south over water before heading west.

The FAA says the plan was devised to help relieve traffic congestion and reduce delays in one of the world's busiest air corridors.
