Spanish Suspect Afghanistan Helo Mishap Was Accident

No Indications Of Hostile Fire

After paying a personal visit to the crash site in western Afghanistan, Spain's defense minister said Wednesday the crash that killed 17 of his soldiers appeared to be an accident.

Defense Minister Jose Bono told Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in a conference call that search teams "had not found indications" of insurgent fire in the rubble. Instead, he said, the most likely theory was that the helo went down because of "strong winds and gusts," according to CNN.

That theory goes along with what Afghan fighters in the region have said -- that there was no insurgent weapons fire near the crash site at the time of the mishap.

Initial reports that a second helicopter (types unknown) was involved in the crash were incorrect, Bono said. While the downed helo was one of two in a flight, the second helicopter made an emergency landing when the pilot thought he was under attack. No one on the second helicopter was hurt, officials said.

The investigation continues.
