IWASM Presents Dinner With A Slice Of History

International Women’s Air & Space Museum Welcomes Bill Meixner, Local Cleveland Historian

On October 13, 2017, the International Women’s Air & Space Museum will host Dinner with a Slice of History featuring a special presentation of the MacRobertson Air Race as told by local Cleveland historian, Bill Meixner. Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the program beginning shortly thereafter.

This "Great Air Race" held in 1934 was an event open to all countries. Initially there were 61 entries from 11 countries and included Jackie Cochran from the United States and British aviatrix Amy (Johnson) Mollison. These female pilots both ended up as worldwide names in aviation.

The intent of the race was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the State of Victoria, Australia. The race itself covered over 11,300 miles including flying over 19 countries and seven seas. The award for winning the race was a prize of $75,000 and a gold trophy.

Those interested in attending can RSVP by calling 216.623.1111 or online at www.iwasm.org. Seating will be limited. The cost for this event is $15 for IWASM members and $17 for non-members. The museum is located inside Burke Lakefront Airport, 1501 N. Marginal Rd., Cleveland, OH 44114.
