Germany Grounds Sea Lynx Helicopters

Mk88A Fleet Is Out Of Service Due To Discovery Of A 'Recurring Fault'

The German Navy has grounded 22 Sea Lynx helicopters due to what was described as a "recurring fault" discovered in the tail booms of the aircraft.

The problem was first reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung daily, and later confirmed by the German Defense Ministry, according to a report appearing on en.haberler.com.

The fault is reportedly a tear or hole about 8 inches long that was first noted on a Sea Lynx Mk88A aircraft deployed aboard a German aircraft carrier. That led to precautionary inspections on other aircraft which uncovered additional similar, but less advanced problems.

The German Defense Ministry confirmed that the 22 aircraft are currently grounded. It hopes to be able to return the helos to service early in 2015. The website reports that the country's 21 larger Sea King aircraft are not affected by the problem.
