As you know by now, in a surprise Saturday announcement, the FAA and City of Santa Monica, California reached a questionable long-term agreement concerning the future operation of Santa Monica Airport (KSMO).

Under the agreement, the airport will continue to operate through 2028 (and can close it as of 2019), the runway length will be reduced from approximately 5,000’ to 3,500’ and the city’s right to operate a proprietary aeronautical service business was reiterated. The reaction by the aviation community was stunned by what appears to be a surprise 180 degree turn by the agency. It’s time to party! Textron Aviation is celebrating the 45th anniversary of the first Cessna Citation delivery. The first Citation jet, a Cessna Citation 500, was delivered to American Airlines in January 1972, where it was used for the development of the company’s training program. Since then, the Citation series has become the most popular line of business jets ever produced with more than 7,000 delivered to customers around the world. The worldwide fleet has amassed nearly 35 million flight hours. Gyroplanes have become more popular over the past several years, and commercially-manufactured models are becoming more widely available. Those developments have led to the issuance of the first night gyrocopter ratings in the U.K. CAA examiner Richard Craske has been working on some of the recent changes in the oversight of gyroplanes in the United Kingdom where the U.K.'s new Air Navigation order went into effect last year. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
