Andok 260 Grease Replacement Introduced by Nye

Improvement Over Discontinued Product

Rheolube 374A, a new lithium soap, medium viscosity, synthetic hydrocarbon grease, not only meets the requirements of MIL-PRF 32014, it is a suitable replacement for Andok(R) 260, a long-life grease recently discontinued by ExxonMobil.

Click to EnlargeRheolube 374A was developed by Nye Lubricants, Inc., at the request of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Nonstructural Materials Branch, to meet the general requirements of MIL-PRF-32014, a multipurpose grease for use in the -54(degree)C to +175(degree)C temperature range in aircraft and missile systems. Rheolube 374A is the only qualified product for this specification (Qualification Reference MLB-02-20, 1 July 2002, Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson AFB). It has been assigned several National Stock Numbers, including NSN 9150-01-499-6634 for a 35 lb. pail.

The formula for Rheolube 374A also enables it to serve as a replacement for Andok 260. Over the past year, some of Nye's customers had requested suitable replacements for Andok C and Andok B, the two other members of the popular family of bearing greases that ExxonMobil discontinued two years ago. Nye developed Rheolube 374C, an NLGI Grade 4 grease as a replacement for Andok C, and Rheolube 374B, an NLGI Grade 2 grease as a replacement for Andok B. Rheolube 374C and Rheolube 374B are both lithium-thickened, synthetic hydrocarbon greases. Like its counterparts, Rheolube 374A offers several functional improvements over the petroleum-based Andoks. For example, compared to Andok 260, Rheolube 374A performs at lower and higher temperatures, has a higher viscosity index and lower evaporation rates, affords better wear protection as measured by the Four-Ball Wear Test (ASTM D-2266), and resists water and saltwater washout.

Early Results Spectacular
