Airborne 06.26.20: NEW DA50-RG!, Sad Bally Bomber News, Ruddervator Repair

Also: METARmaps Unveils USA-3P, NASA Honors Mary Jackson, Edwards AFB Gets 'Experimental', NBAA v Forbes

Diamond is now officially taking the wraps off the much-anticipated carbon fiber DA50 RG with retractable gear.

The airplane sports an extra-large cabin and excellent payload, powered by a 300hp Continental CD-300 jet fuel engine. With one of the widest cabins in its class, the DA50 RG spoils both pilots and passengers with everything known from the twin-engine DA62: generous front seats with adjustable backrests, a 60/40 split folding three seat second row bench, easy access through the large gull wing doors and cargo door and exceptional leg, shoulder and head room. What a shame.... just a few years after the completion of an incredible one-third scale B-17 project and barely two years after it got to take a well-deserved bow at Oshkosh, Bally Bomber Builder/Creator Jack Bally passed away. Nearly twenty years in the making, Bally said that the idea was born over "too much beer one night with a bunch of buddies" as they talked about what kind of airplane they could build that would be the only one of its kind. They settled on the B-17, because as far as they knew, there were no flying 4-engine scale models of WWII airplanes. They had originally intended to build a B-24, but that airplane would not scale properly. While a new repair program won't cover all ills, a major issue for Bonanza owners is in the process of being resolved. For the longest time, damage/cracks occurring to a Bonanza 'V-Tail' Ruddervator meant a horrific search for parts or salvaged assemblies -- which are in VERY short supply -- to get the bird back in the air. Long out of production, Ruddervator repair can become a huge hassle. SRS Aviation has taken a big step forward in dealing with the issue (and there may be others on the way). All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
