NTSB Holding Hearing On Preventing Turbulence-Related Injuries in Air Carriers

Turbulence Has Caused More Than A Third Of Recent Air Carrier Accidents

The National Transportation Safety Board announced its intent to hold a virtual public board meeting Aug. 10, to consider ways to reduce turbulence-related injuries in air carrier operations conducted under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 121.

In recent years turbulence caused more than a third of air carrier accidents. The board will consider a safety research report that details methods to reduce the likelihood of turbulence encounters and identifies best practices and countermeasures to avoid turbulence-related injuries.

During the meeting the NTSB’s four board members will vote on investigators' findings and recommendations as well as any changes to the draft report.

In keeping with established federal and local social distancing guidelines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, while also ensuring the NTSB’s compliance with the Government in the Sunshine Act, the board meeting for this event will be webcast to the public, with the board members and investigative staff meeting virtually. There will be no physical gathering to facilitate the board meeting.

  • WHAT: A virtual NTSB board meeting on preventing turbulence-related injuries in Part 121 air carrier operations.
  • WHO: NTSB investigative staff and board members.
  • WHEN: Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 9:30 a.m. Eastern.
  • HOW: A link to the webcast will be available shortly before the start of the meeting at http://ntsb.windrosemedia.com/.

A recording of the availability will be made available on the NTSB YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/user/NTSBgov, shortly after the session.
