Airborne 05.13.19: Apollo 11 Manual, Ageless Aviation, D-Day Squadron

Also: FlightSafety Expands, CHC Scotia, Karen K. Duncan Scholarship, DJI Action Cam

The instruction manual that guided Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to a successful landing on the moon is set to be auctioned by Christies as part of a larger sale celebrating space exploration and the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11.

The manual was reportedly on board the Eagle lunar lander right between Armstrong and Aldrin as Armstrong reported, "Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." Just after landing, Aldrin wrote the coordinates of the lander on page 10 of the book, the first off-world writing by a human. Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation (AADF), a nonprofit that honors U.S. military veterans with free Dream Flights, is adding a restored 1943 Stearman biplane to its fleet, thanks to the fundraising efforts of a local community in Wisconsin. Since 2011, AADF has given more than 3,700 Dream Flights to veterans and seniors living in long-term care communities. The Spirit of Wisconsin will be based at Stevens Point Municipal Airport, a "fitting home," said Darryl Fisher, AADF founder and president. After almost 18 months of planning, fundraising and training, the D-Day Squadron, the American contingent of Douglas C-47 and DC-3 transports participating in Daks over Normandy, is about to embark on their journey to Europe to celebrate the 75th anniversary of D-Day. On May 19th, the D-Day Squadron will depart Oxford-Waterbury airport in Connecticut and head East to cross the Atlantic along the original Blue Spruce route. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
