Airborne 02.03.20: Embraer Phenom 300E, Young Eagles, FAA Misconduct Report

Also: NTSB Safety Recommendation, Teamsters Lawsuit, Whirly-Girls 2020, Learjet 75 Liberty

Embraer has announced a series of improvements to its Phenom 300 series of business jets.

The Phenom 300E is now the first single-pilot jet to reach Mach 0.80, offering a quieter cabin and upgrades to its avionics that include predictive windshear and a runway overrun awareness and alerting system. The Phenom 300E now delivers a high-speed cruise of 464 knots and a five-occupant range of 2,010 nautical miles with NBAA IFR reserves. The Phenom 300E’s avionics upgrades include a runway overrun awareness and alerting system, predictive windshear, Emergency Descent Mode, PERF, TOLD, FAA Datacom and many others. EAA’s Young Eagles program surpassed 2.2 million kids flown since the first program’s flights took place at the 1992 EAA Fly-In Convention at Oshkosh. “As we reach each of these milestones, it’s a further credit to the dedication of the EAA-member pilots and volunteers who have committed their time and aircraft to bringing young people into aviation,” said Jack Pelton, EAA CEO and chairman of the board. U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS), chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and  Transportation, is highlighting information the committee received from whistleblowers alleging misconduct by managers working for the FAA in the Hawaii Flight Standards District Office. This initial whistleblower, an FAA employee, alleged that FAA managers too frequently overrode the recommendations of inspectors, hampering the ability of inspectors to conduct effective oversight. The whistleblower also alleged that at least one manager issued improper check ride certifications. The whistleblower indicated that his/her knowledge was indirect but well known by local employees and representatives of the Professional Aviation Safety Specialist (PASS) union. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
