USAF Carpets Glider Landing Strip

Artificial Turf Smoother, More Economical Than Grass

Gliders taking off and landing at the U.S Air Force Academy are now operating from a surface that should be familiar with many NFL players ... artificial turf.

The surface, which is expected to last some 25 years, is smoother and more economical than grass, Air Force officials said. The Associated Press reports that Academy brass said that the grass strip was bumpier and harder on the aircraft than the new turf, and it will not require regular watering and mowing. They also said the markings on the runway will be easier for the pilots to see.

The installation of the turf cost about $3.6 million. The academy replaced its glider fleet last year, purchasing 19 new aircraft and 11 trailers for some $4.8 million.
