'Now Put Away Your Books And Take Out Your Cessnas...'

New Aviation High School Opens In Washington

Boy, this is the kind of thing that almost makes you wish you were a kid again. Come the fall, Washington's King County will open Aviation High School close to Boeing Field and SEA-TAC Airport. The name says it all.

Imagine an institution where all students receive ground school instruction. Imagine, instead of spending the afternoon reading Macbeth, studying the components vital to launching a space shuttle.

Enough imagining already, this is the real deal. Aviation High School will take on 100 new students each year for four years, spreading the aviation gospel at the Duwamish campus of South Seattle Community College.

Okay, you'll still have to read Macbeth, but you can look forward to that ground school instruction...

King County school officials hope the small magnet school, which requires a prospective student to compete in entry tests and personal interviews, will draw children away from private schools by centering on a special interest (like aviation). The school opens in the fall and will remain on the community college campus for two years while district leaders look for a permanent home.
