F/A-18 Down Near Miramar, Pilot Ejects Safely

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 11.30.06 1615 EST: A USMC F/A-18 fighter is down east of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, outside San Diego, CA.

Military officials say the pilot was able to eject safely, and was located by rescue personnel. The pilot, from VMFAT-101 flying on a routine training mission, was found east of the wreckage.

"He was conscious and did not appear to have major trauma," San Diego Fire Department spokesman Maurice Luque said.

Local news outlets report the fighter crashed in a remote area near MCAS Miramar just before noon.

Firefighters put out a small brush fire ignited by the wreckage.
